Years on Central Sulawesi’s Waters
The desk has been arranging trips in these waters for over a decade, from the coral gardens of Kadidiri to the B-24 wreck. The Togean Islands and the Banggai Archipelago are the desk’s home ground, and the guides we work with dive them year-round.
How We Plan a Private Togean Trip
Each itinerary is built around the guests it is for. From arrival in Luwuk we usually arrange a private car or van for the road trip to Ampana, which takes about 6 to 8 hours. From there you can choose a chartered private speedboat or the scheduled public ferry to reach the Togeans. The ferry from Ampana to Wakai takes approximately 4 to 5 hours; a speedboat cuts that to about 1.3 to 1.5 hours.
Trips are planned around the best diving seasons, typically May to October, with the calmest waters from July to September. Dives are selected for the group’s experience level, whether that means the deep swim-through at The Crack or snorkelling among the harmless golden jellyfish in Mariona Lake.

The dive sites we cover most closely include:
- The Pinnacle at Una Una – renowned for its fish biomass and striking sponges.
- Kadidiri House Reef – suitable for both day and night dives.
- Pasir Tengah – a vast coral atoll with dramatic vertical walls.

- B-24 wreck – a World War II relic turned artificial reef.

Luwuk is our base because it sits close to both the Togean Islands and the Banggai Archipelago, and it is well connected by regular flights from Makassar. From Luwuk the desk can organise trips to see the region’s marine life, including the Banggai cardinalfish.
How the Desk Matches a Trip to a Diver
Planning starts with experience level and interests. For beginners or anyone wanting a relaxed dive, the desk usually suggests Taipi Wall and Kadidiri House Reef: good coral and gentle walls without deep-water stress. For advanced divers, Una Una Pinnacle and the Pasir Tengah atoll offer more marine life and more dramatic underwater terrain. For snorkellers, Jellyfish Lake on Katupat Island is a distinctive stop.
Why Luwuk, Not Just Ampana
Staging from Luwuk rather than the more common Ampana allows a more flexible itinerary. Guests travel overland from Luwuk to Ampana in six to eight hours, then continue by speedboat to Wakai in roughly 1.3 to 1.5 hours. The extra leg buys time to read the weather and pick the calmer crossing window typical of the May to October season.
